MADISON - Frederick Charles "Fritz" Kaump, age 62, of
Madison, died on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at University Hospital after a
long battle with colon cancer. He was born on Dec. 4, 1941, in Detroit,
Mich., Fritz moved to Madison in 1968, and immediately became involved
in community, educational, and recreational activities. Fritz retired
from the Madison Public School system in 1997, after serving as a
guidance counselor for nearly three decades at Memorial High School.
Fritz also taught night school at West High, and came out of retirement
to serve as an interim guidance counselor at Shabazz High. He received
the distinguished honor of a Purple Heart for his service in the Vietnam
War and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8216 in Middleton. He coached
boys and girls' varsity golf at Memorial High for many years, as well as
football and basketball. Fritz also ran softball tournaments out of
Springfield Corners for years and was a co-founder of the Herb Tarlek
Open in Middleton, to benefit those battling cancer with limited or no
medical insurance. Mr. Kaump held a B.A. in business from the University
of Michigan, an M.A. in guidance counseling from Eastern Michigan
University, and an E.D.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Survivors include two adult daughters, Kathleen Kaump Truitt of
Columbia, N.C., and Cynthia Kaump Luedtke of Chicago, Ill.; a teenage
son, Sean Kaump of Madison; a grandson, Clayton Truitt of Columbia,
N.C.; a granddaughter, Libby Truitt of Columbia, N.C.; three brothers,
Donald Kaump II of Loudon, Tenn., Robert Kaump of Carlsbad, Calif., and
Richard Kaump of Beach Bluff, Tenn.; and a fiancee, Lavonne Strawn of
Rockford, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann Futrell
Kaump; and a brother, John "Jack" Kaump of Brighton, Mich.
Funeral services will be held at MADISON CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY, 7118 Old
Sauk Road, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, with the Rev. Tisha
Adams officiating. Private burial will be in the German Lutheran
Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, March 1,
2004, at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road. In lieu of flowers,
