GREEN VALLEY, ARIZ. - Mark Joseph Weiss, age 68, died on
Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in a Tucson, Ariz., hospice, of emphysema. In
1995 he underwent a lung reduction at University Hospital, Madison, to
ease his advancing emphysema. This surgery gave him seven years of
health, happiness, love and golf. Mark was born on Dec. 21, 1933, the
son of Elizabeth and Joseph Weiss of Aurora, Ill. He received his high
school and college education at Pontifical College of Josephimum,
Columbus, Ohio, and his master's degree in education administration at
Loyola University, Chicago, Ill. He was ordained a Roman Catholic
priest, serving parishes in northern Illinois from 1959 to 1969. Coming
to Madison in 1969, he was employed as a guidance counselor at Memorial
High School. Mark became an assistant principal from 1973 to 1994 at
Memorial High School, at which time ill health forced him to leave the
profession and students he so dearly loved. Each December Mark looked
forward to his Madison golfing buddies coming to his home in Green
Valley, Ariz., for a week of golf and fellowship. He just celebrated his
24 blessed years of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. On Dec. 27, 1997,
Mark married Susan Lerdahl Spilde at Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison.
They are grateful for the five wonderful, loving years they shared with
family and friends at their homes in Madison and Green Valley. How he
loved the clear view of the mountains from his Arizona home. Mark is
survived by his very loving wife, Susan; his two devoted sons, Steven
Weiss and his wife, Lainie Perlman, of Washington, D.C., and Peter Weiss
and his special friend, Holly Brisco, of Seattle, Wash.; a sister,
Sister Donna Weiss of Campbellsport; three step-children, James Spilde
of San Diego, Calif., Richard (Janelle) Spilde and step-granddaughter,
Amy, of Madison, and Karen Spilde of Sturgeon Bay and step-grandson,
Cory Vanover; a sister-in-law, Jean Weiss of Aurora, Ill., and her
children; his brothers-in-law, Thomas Lerdahl (Cindy) of Woodruff, and
David Lerdahl of Madison; a sister-in-law, Mary (Edward) Pryzina of
Woodruff; a large extended family by his marriage to Susan; his former
wife, Nancy Zimmers of Miami, Fla.; and his many, many friends. His
brother, Leon Weiss; and parents preceded him in death. We are sure
going to miss you, Mark. Your love, kindness; humor and honesty will
always be with us; so many happy memories. A "Gathering" in Mark's honor
will be held in January in Madison. The time and place will be announced
at a later date.
